Compounded Medications

Medications that are compounded are TAILOR-MADE specifically for you in the pharmacy, by the pharmacy team, according to a prescription. These medications are not available commercially either because the dose is not available or the form that it is compounded in, is not commercially available.

The advantage of compounded medication:

1. It canbypass side effects from taking oral medication. An example would be a topical anti-inflammatory that bypasses the stomach upset of an oral medication.

2. For patients who cannot swallow tablets or capsules - often medications can be made into liquids or suppositories. This works really well for antibiotics for children.

3. When patients require multiple medications to treat a condition (e.g. pain),  ONE topical compounded transdermal cream may be able to incorporate a number of ingredients to provide relief.
